I looked on as Fletch and Quintyn duked it out. These really were just filler fights before the real competition of the finals and semis. When you lose, you lose. You don't pass go, you don't collect $200. Only the undefeated were in the competition. That being said, I was able to duke it out with Fletch after a few more turns.
I flashed him a sly grin as I stood up; rolling the sleeves from my sweaters in a futile attempt to keep it out of my way. It always droops down moments later in the least helpful situations. I raced him down the bottom of the steps and energetically skipped over to the circle, rubbing my hands together in a playful manner as I waited for Fletch to join me. Casper approached us and gave us a small laugh and didn't bother to repeat his instructions as he gave Fletch a light-hearted nudge before trotting back to his original spot. As soon as the whistle blew I twisted my body into a side kick. It was a lot easier to do it with wind on your side, where you could basically propel yourself towards your enemies in a roundhouse kick of sorts. I managed the kick, although less effective as it found it's home in between Fletch's ribs and pelvis. Before I could pull away, he grabbed a hold of my foot and tugged it forward, where I collapsed. He seemed to hesitate with his attack however, and only got a half hearted punch in before I made it back to my feet. We tried our best to be competitive about it and prove each other through sophisticated techniques and carefully planned movements, but then I ran at Fletch and tickle him. He responded by violently wrapping his arm around my head and giving me a well deserved noogie after fits of laughter. I retaliated by pantsing him in front of the whole arena, revealing his infamous duckie underwear we had used as part of a pillow fort during our last quest. This kept going back and forth until Chiron had to separate us for not doing proper fighting conduct. I'd like to think that I was winning that fight anyways.
The semifinals kickstarted with Finn and Lumen up to the plate. Finn was pretty well known as that laid back person that doesn't do anything when you're looking but somehow surprises you with the strength and well-toned muscles that seemed to get there when you weren't looking. She wore a black tank top that revealed such traits in her biceps tucked into her cargo pants which were, in turn, tucked under her brown leather boots. She slinked down her place in the bleachers down to the arena floor with a mischievous grin to her face. Along with Gary, Finn could put up a fight during these games... if she felt like it. She seemed in it to win it by the sudden interest she seemed to show in her face. Maybe Lumen was surprising her as much as everyone else in the arena and she wanted to experience the girl's wrath first-handed. They shook hands, exchanging light hearted words, but both of them shown a competitive hunger in their eyes. They knew the other person was going all out.
They stood on the opposite ends of the circle and with whistle blew. The match was beautiful to watch from start to end. Finn was below average height so despite her strength, her fighting technique was quick and agile. Finn moved in circles; ducking and changing positions with every punch Lumen threw to catch her off guard. Being sneaky was a prominent trait in children of Hermes, and arguably the most challenging offense against Lumen. Finn caught her off guard and hit her across and outstretched arm. Lumen's eyes widened in surprised but she readjusted, anticipating Finn's next move by jumping over her leg sweep and counterattacking with a strong strike to the forehead. Finn stepped back but regained her careful balance on the balls of her feet as Lumen threw herself into the attack with more hits and punches. Finn was constantly being pushed back, barely dodging each attack and going in uncomfortable positions that resembled doing the limbo. Finn managed to roll herself away from the situation and strike her in the ankle, causing Lumen to begin to topple forward until she caught herself. Unaware that Lumen was completely aware of her surroundings, Finn attempted to approach her. Lumen took her by surprise and kicked backwards, hitting Finn in the knee. Lumen stood up and ran at Finn, grabbing her by the back of the head and thrusting it down, then kneeing her in the face. Finn collapsed, sputtering and coughing and I began to wonder how hard Lumen meant to hit her. Finn's movement was slow and groggy as Lumen stepped back to wait if her opponent would ever recover. After a good half a minute of swatting her arms ineffectively in the air, Finn tapped out, unable to properly concentrate. The crowd cheered for Lumen, no longer shocked at her skills. Some had even bet against Finn, and happily rose their betting money in the air. Lumen immediately rushed to her aid and you could see a red face mark of blood on the floor from Finn's nose and lip as Lumen peeled her face off the ground.
"Shit, you're good." was all that could escape her lips as she leaned on Lumen's shoulder and limped to the bleachers. Before Finn even had a chance to put her butt on the ground, the new fighters were called out.
"Finn Thatcher, May Smith."
Finn gave out a slurred groan as she sat back up.
"You sure you can fight, Finn?" I asked her from a couple of rows above hers.
She looked up at me and I could see the residue of her blood smeared against her left cheek as she gave me a bold smile.
"And miss taking on Princess over there? Nah. I'm fine, really."
