Full Name: Evander Pyrrhus Ajax, Jr.
Age: 15
Description or Playby: Liam Hemsworth
Evander stands at 6'3 and weighs 178lbs. He has medium brunette hair which is kept short to avoid giving anyone a grip on it fighting. He has blue eyes which tend to jump constantly as he looks around at everything.
The first thing people tend to think when they see Evander is "jock" or "football player". The second thing is "Stop moving!" He is constantly in motion, whether bouncing his leg or tapping his fingers. Sometimes his entire body shakes with energy, so he's constantly exercising.
Evander has dozens of small, faint scars over his body. He has one large scar that goes down his left thigh almost to the knee. When it rains or snows, he walks with a slight, but noticeable limp.
Sexuality: Mostly hetero.
Olympian Parent: Ares
Mortal Parent: Erika Skjeggestad
Personality:
Evander Pyrrhus Ajax, Jr. is not like the average typical child of Ares who loves to fight and will bully just to bully. He's sensitive and kind, but he will punch you without thinking if you ever call him "Junior", or "Pyrrhus", or anything other than "Evander" or "Ajax". He'll just apologize afterwards.
Talkative, although he stutters when he's nervous or around new people, Evander wants to be people's friend. He doesn't talk about himself or his feelings much, but he'll listen to people, as long as they don't mind not having his full attention or only having his full attention. He also has a bad habit of eavesdropping on every conversation he's around, but unless he jumps in and joins, he's going to forget it within an hour or less. Maybe after he sees a squirrel.
Evander has never gotten control of his impulsive and aggressive nature. He feels he is more impulsive and distracted than the average ADHD Demigod, and it makes him very self-conscious. He hyperfocuses on things like exercise and training, he can't stand changes in his routine and will quickly lose his temper if he has to change his routine or people keep interrupting him. His temper, though, goes out as fast as it comes, and he rarely holds a grudge. This can make him more awkward, because his outbursts can have others stay mad at him when he's already forgotten about the entire thing.
Evander is also very very self conscious of his lack of book learning. He can't read well even in Ancient Greek, and can only read at a second or third grade level in English on his best days. Trying frustrates him easily, and so he usually asks someone else to do it for him. The son of Ares is, however, quite skilled with maps and math. He can calculate battlefield equations in his head and figure out anything from sniper trajectories to statistics on casualties. Just don't ask him to write it down.
Ajax is sensitive to bullying, and violence. He doesn't tolerate it, and he will break your nose for it. It's probably a good thing he hasn't met his godly father yet. He also tends to have trouble sleeping, so he'll try to sneak out past curfew just to walk around.
Evander Ajax, son of Ares, big burly man, is terrified mice and cannot explain why. He also hates elevators and enclosed spaces. He is an incredibly picky eater due to texture.
History:
Ares can't keep his hands off married women. If you ask Evander about his family, especially his godly father, that's the first thing he'll say. Erika Skjeggestad was a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the US Navy and married to both her career and Sergeant Evander Ajax, USMC, when she met Ares.
Evander doesn't know why Ares chose his mother, she didn't love combat or fighting, nor revel in blood lust. She was a corpsman who saved lives on and off the battlefield. Well decorated, but not a fierce warrior in Evander's mind. Perhaps he will never know the truth.
Evander was born in early fall, his mother's second child, but her only of Ares. His mother had hidden the affair with Ares from the man who gave him his name, the man he grew to call father. The lie hoped to bring normalcy, and for the first several years of Evander's life, it did, or at least as normal as military brats can get.
Evander had severe trouble with ADHD as a child, he was not only hyper and impulsive, but prone to impulsive aggression. This lead to him getting removed from several daycares and schools, being prescribed medication and therapy, and many near brawls with his parents. The only way that his parents were able to keep him out of trouble was to exercise him to exhaustion every night. This made him less hyper, but he still had trouble with his impulsive behavior.
In school Evander never got a grade above C. Early in his second grade he was also diagnosed with dyslexia. No amount of therapy helped with it, and only frustrated the boy. His earth father disciplined him constantly for failing grades and being unable to read. The only time it got better was when now Gunnery Sergeant Ajax was shipped off on TDA for weeks or months at a time. His refuge outside of the TDA assignments was his older sister, Alexandra. She would read to him, and tell him stories, teach him hands on and wrestle with him as necessary, though he drove her crazy.
When Evander was 9, he was sent to a strict military academy for troubled children, after having been ejected from yet another school. For some reason, although he was still struggling to get past 2nd grade reading, Evander actually excelled at the Puller Academy for Military Education. He stayed at Puller for two years, only going home to his parents during the summers.
During Evander's summers home, he noticed a change in both of his parents. His mother had become withdrawn and anxious, jumping at small sounds. Evander Senior was more irritable, eyes bloodshot red all the time, and he was as prone to fits of anger as Evander himself. He heard mentions of PTSD and some sort of horrible action that Evander Senior had seen on TDA.
Evander's life changed three weeks before he turned 12. His mother was killed in a mugging while Evander Senior was assigned to 9 months TDA in Germany. While it devastated Evander and Alexandra, it nearly destroyed Evander Senior. The Marine started drinking, and stopped taking his medications. He was barely able to keep it together to do his duties. A week after his mother's death, Evander found himself on a flight to Strassburg, Germany.
Without his mother, and with Evander Senior in an emotional upheaval, Evander recognized two things very quickly. First, he looked absolutely nothing like his "father", who was 5'6 with dark hair and dark eyes. The second was that his "father" was quite resentful of that. Their relationship quickly deteriorated, turning violent within a few months. The MPs were never called to the house, but some people on the base seemed to know. Alexandra tried to mediate, and act as the mother, but often times she had no recourse.
Things came to a head when Evander Senior retired from the Marine Corps and they moved back home to Missouri. They lived in a rural area, no neighbors to speak of. Evander Senior was drunk again, bouncing threats from sending Evander to Puller again to beating him to within an inch of his life. Alexandra tried to step in to stop it, but Evander Senior hit her hard enough to send her to the floor. Evander's control broke at that point, and he doesn't really remember what happened next. The aftermath was him driving down the road in his father's old suburban with a gash running down his thigh, his hands and face feeling like they had been turned to hamburger meat.
Evander drove for a hundred miles, sure the police were after him. He was fourteen, but could pass as sixteen at least, so he hoped he wouldn't be pulled over. He knew how to drive a vehicle off-road, and on road wasn't much harder. When Evander stopped, he noticed that Evander Senior's cell phone was in the car with him. He only knew as few people's numbers that might be willing to help. After dialling three times, he got a hold of one of the teachers from Puller, Edgar Fitz. Mr. Fitz had always taken a special interest in Evander and had been especially upset when he left for Germany. Now as far as Evander was concerned, Fitz was his only hope.
He was right in more ways than one. His mother had always taught him stories of Greek mythology, but he had never been told the truth. How was he to know a cellphone was the last thing he should use? By the time Mr. Fitz arrived at his location, three Laestrygonian giants had too. Evander was weak from blood loss already, armed only with a large iron pipe and a small silver buck knife his mother had given him when he turned 10. He had kept them back, swinging wildly at their major joints to make mobility difficult. Mr. Fitz joined in and dispatched the three as Evander watched in mixed awe and horror, fairly certain he had a concussion or something and was hallucinating.
Mr. Fitz, protector and satyr, took Evander to Camp Half-Blood for protection and explained everything to the young man. Evander didn't like, or accept, the explanation for at least two weeks, but he saw similarities between himself and the other kids claimed by Ares. A war god, no wonder he was always so aggressive.
Evander had trouble adjusting to life at Camp Half-Blood. The lack of routine and discipline was startling. He was one of the few in his cabin who made their bed to military standards, although at least he wasn't the only one to clean weapons. His hyperactivity and aggression were not only accepted, but celebrated, and that disturbed Evander quite a bit. He didn't want to celebrate violence and blood lust, he just couldn't help it. After a year at Camp Half-Blood, he has for the most part adjusted to the life. He sends Iris messages to his sister on a regular basis, and pays people to write letters for him to her. He just doesn't believe he could ever go home to the man he once called father.
