I stared at the coffee that had inched further and further away from me with a pout. My coffee. Mine.
Despite Quintyn's rude coffee grab, she did have a point. Charlie is good at manipulating minds. Whose to say he can't manipulate dreams? He could be well aware of our ambush, he might not even had set up camp there and just created an illusion that he did. I turned to Zack to see if he had anything to say. It was hard to decipher his emotions behind that unsettling mask of his; I always just went with 'scary' when I wondered to myself what he was feeling.
What's Zack feeling right now? He's feeling scary.
He kept quite most of the talk though, as if he was pondering, or at least not in agreement with us over our suspicions with Leslie. Quintyn seemed to target Leslie more, however I could admit this was all Charlie's doing. Quintyn had a biased dislike towards Leslie anyways.
"Well." I finally began, still eyeing my coffee hungrily. "It is really sketchy that Charlie is making it that easy for us, but that's the only lead we have and the only one we can follow. I've been on last year's quest and I know that Charlie can be a pain. If there was some way to maybe surround the cabin so we are aware of every side that can attack us... I dunno I'm no strategist, that's your category, Quin."
In the background noise, I heard a bell ding as someone else opened the door. I didn't pay much attention to it but I looked over to Zack as his eyes became fixated on the new customer.
"Zack? Are you oka-" My voice was caught in my throat as I turned around.
A floating corpse. A dead woman in rags flew right into Starbucks so leisurely as if she just wanted to grab a caramel frapuccino. I knew better, that was Maniai, goddess of insanity. Her body was facing the register ready order, but her head twisted back towards me, the black void where her eyes were supposed to be had small red dots glowing in them, boring holes into me and I wondered if she was still pissed about last year's quest, where I had faced my fears and walked right past her. I had grown accustomed to her gruesome appearance, but that didn't mean I didn't want to race out of here. I looked to Zack and I remembered something important. Maniai was rumored to be the daughter of Nyx, and I shivered at the thought that they are technically relatives. I looked back towards Maniai, and she had teleported to where Leslie had been sitting and I jumped in my seat. My eyes hardened. You're not gonna scare me again. I slowly stood up from my chair, signalling the rest to do the same.
"Let's leave." I told them.
Maniai's open gaped mouth twisted into a grin, and all the mortals in the store began to stare at us with wide eyes.
I cursed in my head as I jumped out of my chair, reaching for the exit and looking back to make sure the others did the same. The mortals began getting out of their chairs, yelling at us with threats that didn't make sense. Names like 'Nazi', 'Chavez, and 'George' poured out of their mouths as if they were facing their worst enemy. I realized Maniai had implanted herself into the mortals' brains, but instead of making herself seen to them, we had suddenly been warped in their perception as something they should fear, and attack.
