16
Description or Playby:
Nephele has dark skin, hazel eyes and poofy black hair styled in an afro. She's a small girl, short and petite standing at 5'1 and weighing 110 LBS, earning her a rectangular body shape. She carries a Trinidadian accent thanks to growing up in the Caribbean Islands for most of her life. Nephele sports a soft style, mostly seen wearing pastel colours and floral dresses. She'll also wear graphic t-shirts with eco-friendly messages on them. She's a lover of baggy clothes, and doesn't wear any that cling to her body if she can help it. She usually refrains from wearing makeup, solely because she hates the way it feels on her face.
Sexuality:
Bisexual
Olympian Parent:
Persephone
Mortal Parent:
Andrew Mclean
Personality:
Nephele is a gentle girl who wouldn't hurt a fly if she could help it. She possesses a calming air to her and is usually perceived to be full of life. Although she is a usually peaceful individual, it is not unknown for Neph to get angry at others, especially over something she is passionate in. The fact that Nephele isn't usually the angry type makes her intimidating when she is upset with someone. Nephele is a very protective person, mostly towards those she holds close to her and especially towards her flowers. She has a chaotic personality and usually can't help but make a mess wherever she goes. She usually doesn't even realize it's happening due to her scattered brain. Neph can be very charismatic and charming when she wants to. Outwardly she comes off as confident and sure of herself, but inwardly she's a mess of self-esteem issues. She very secretly dislikes herself immensely and can't help but see her flaws above her perfections. She doesn't let people see her true feelings for herself, and instead plays herself up to be a lot greater than she actually thinks she is. Some people find this incredibly annoying of her. Nephele is highly stubborn, and quite a defiant girl. She prefers to live her life by her own rules and hates taking orders from others. Despite this, she is very against playing the role of 'leader' in a group setting. She hates having large amounts of responsibility put onto her, so Neph prefers to work alone. She possesses a mischievous flare and finds playing pranks on unsuspecting campers to be one of her favourite activities besides gardening and dance. As a child, Nephele was introduced to the world of ballet, which quickly resulted in her taking an interest into many other forms of dance like tap, agro and street dancing. Neph is quite well rounded with natural healing. She prefers to naturally heal herself with herbs than to take medicines. She reads a lot of medical books on the subject and practices with it whenever she can. Along with herbal healing, she practices crystal healing and has quite the collection of valuable crystals she keeps in a box near her bed in the Demeter cabin, where she spends many of her nights instead of being in the Hermes cabin. She feels the crystals are safer with her friends there than they are in the Hermes cabin. Nephele is a lover of yoga and meditation, spending a lot of her time near the beach, or on the Demeter cabin garden roof in peaceful tranquility.
History:
Andrew Mclean was known in his town for being a shut in, completely detached from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Andrew owned and worked in a flower shop on the corner of Nathai St, where he spent most of his days quietly tending to the flowers he loved and cared dearly for.
It was in this shop that he met the woman of his dreams.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, during a particularly busy hour in the shop Andrew was tending to a few customers when a beautiful woman caught his eye. She had gravitated towards a sickly looking plant Andrew had been attempting to revive for a few days now. The woman touched it gently with her extraordinarily pale finger tips, and to Andrew's amazement, the plants flourished instantly.
Andrew quickly finished wrapping the bouquet of assorted flowers for the customer he was assisting before he hurried over to approach the woman, ordering a slacking employee to take the cash register for him.
Andrew and Persephone held a lengthy and in depth conversation about the different kinds of plants in Andrew's shop as he showed the woman around. The two clicked wonderfully together, and Andrew became infatuated with her quickly. When the crowd had died down in the shop, Andrew asked Persephone who she was to have revived a plant with a simple touch. Realizing she had been caught in the act, Persephone confessed her identity as the Goddess of Spring to the man she had only just met.
Andrew didn't believe her at first, but the Goddess proved herself by turning Andrew's employee into a daffodil before his eyes. After a good laugh, Persephone brought the teenage boy back and Andrew decided to close the flower shop early that day.
The two spent the whole day walking around the city of Rio Carlo together. They ended up sleeping together, and the day after, Persephone left. It broke Andrew's heart when she never came back. He never forgot about her.
Nephele showed up on the doorstep of the flower shop 9 months later, wrapped in a blanket decorated with roses. A note came with her, explaining to Andrew that the baby was his, and that he'd have to look after her. Persephone wrote about Camp Half-Blood, and how his daughter would have to attend due to her very different fate. Around Nephele's neck was a bronze necklace with a pomegranate charm decorated with red rubies as the seeds dangling from the chain.
Andrew took Nephele in with a huge heart, loving his daughter from the moment he'd laid eyes on her.
Nephele grew up in Trinidad with her father, spending 13 years of her life there. As long as she could remember she worked, helping her father in his flower shop. Whenever a plant died, it would always thrive once it was in her care. She loved being in the flower shop.
Neph and her father had a good relationship with each other. They got along really well and shared a close bond together. Andrew spoiled Nephele whenever he got the chance.
Nephele did pretty badly in school, reaching a D+/C grade average. She found it very hard to focus due to her ADHD, and her disinterest in forceful learning. She really hated doing the assignments her teachers gave to her. Neph dreamed of leaving school to travel the world and become a nomad, learning from experience instead of from boring books and written projects. She was constantly in trouble with teachers for not listening and messing around with her friends. Nephele and her father often got into fights over her grades, but he was an understanding man who knew her troubles were justified.
Due to her mother being a minor Goddess, and Nephele living so far away from New York, Neph didn't have many run-ins with monsters during her life. The only attack was on a particularly quiet Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 PM. Nephele was working around the flower shop while her father was out doing a few errands. It was only she and an employee that had been working for her father for about a year. His name was Anthos, and was a young boy a little older than Nephele. He had come from New York City and walked with crutches due to a problem he had in his legs. He sported a tanned complexion with a brown, curly mop of hair on his head and very dark brown eyes to match. Anthos and Nephele had become good friends over the year that he had worked in the shop. The two were taking a break and goofing off when suddenly Anthos became incredibly anxious to get out of the building. Insisting that they couldn't just leave, Nephele denied him and couldn't help but wonder why the boy was acting so strangely. She didn't have to ponder for long, because soon there was a loud crash from the front window of the store.
Anthos ducked behind the counter with Nephele, and the two watched in horror as the flower shop was pelted and beaten by birds carrying metal beaks. With a flock of birds flying and screeching around her fathers flower shop, and her lovely plants being pushed off of shelves to their demise all around her, Nephele quickly became disoriented and emotional. Luckily for her, Anthos knew exactly what to do. The boy took quick action and pulled out a pan flute from around his neck. He proceeded to play it harshly, purposefully hitting the highest notes he could. When the birds were disoriented, he paused to instruct Nephele on how to use her pomegranate necklace to her advantage.
When Nephele thought about the small pendant becoming a sharp bronze knife, it obeyed her and in a flash of light became a reliable weapon. Not knowing how to use it, Nephele thrust it into Anthos' hands. She hated the idea of having to kill living things. Anthos ditched his crutches and kicked off his running shoes to reveal hooves, something that caused Nephele even further confusion. He leaped into battle, but without being able to keep the birds disoriented he quickly became overpowered. Anthos would have died if Nephele hadn't somehow been able to control the plants that had survived the attack and still sat in pots. They stretched to large lengths and wrapped themselves around the birds at her command. Anthos was able to defeat the flock of man-eating monsters, and was quickly able to convince Nephele to come with him.
The two ran from the flower shop, leaving it in it's utterly destroyed state. Nephele's heart ached for it, she ached for all of this to be a dream. She hated to think about what her father would do if he found his shop like this. Anthos, in all of his goat-legged glory, was able to determine the whereabouts of Andrew by scent. The majority of the Satyr's clothes had been ripped in the battle with the birds, revealing his brown furry legs. Nephele wondered how the people around them didn't stare at the sight.
When Anthos informed Andrew of the attack, her father informed her of who her mother was, and what she was. She was given the note that had shown up on the doorstep along with her. It was a letter from Persephone explaining to her what her life was to become. Nephele really had no choice to believe all of this, though she hated to think this was reality. That night, Nephele and Andrew packed her bags and went to the airport. She was forced to leave her father behind, as he would have nowhere to stay in New York, but he promised that once he found a place in the big city that he would join her in America. Anthos accompanied Nephele to Camp Half-Blood and stuck by her loyally during her first few months of camp to help her integrate into her new life.
Andrew moved to a small apartment in New York City and now works at the New York Botanical Gardens. He is saving his money in hopes to open another flower shop.
