"So, what now?"
Dean sat beside me on the foot of Half-Blood hill, his light brown eyes scanned the area as if he was taking in Camp Half-Blood for the first time. Considering the abrupt and hurried introduction, I guess it really was his first time taking a good luck at this place. He spoke his words out almost wistfully, as if he didn't know what to do with himself, and he put a hand through his wild mess of hair. I was surprised it didn't get stuck there.
"Lily should be here soon. She seemed to have a pretty stable plan." I replied, scanning the cabin area for signs of her.
It was a day after we got back from our quest, and everyone seemed to be moving in slow motion, tired and unmotivated for their daily activities. Dean slept in the Big House, near the infirmary as Roxy showed him some of the ropes, but his sleeping quarters were not permanent. Lily seemed to have talked more to Chiron about Dean's accommodations, and the idea of building a small cabin outside the border cropped up to be a possible idea. The details were the ones I was a bit fuzzy about, though. I turned back to Dean, who was staring at his lighter as he played with it in his hands, as if contemplating if setting me on fire was a good idea.
"Looking for me, boys?" I heard a familiar voice call out.
I tilted my head and squinted my eyes as the sun temporarily caused me to lose my sight. I saw a figure hovering over me, but I couldn't make out who it was. I raised an arm and squinted harder, trying to readjust my eyes to the light. I made out two gray eyes staring back at me.
"Lily! I thought you were at the cabins." I grinned when I saw her.
"Nah, I was at the Big House, just covering a few things up with Chiron and the Hephaestus kids." Lily stepped aside to reveal her fellow constructors. A large group of rather muscular looking, tanned girls and guys all holding large planks and various tools looked at us with excited grins, as if we were a school project on a subject that didn't suck. Next to them, Chiron was wearing a hazard hat and carrying a couple of rolled up blueprints. On his horse back, instead of where a saddle would usually be, a large toolbelt sat.
"Wow, how did we not notice all you guys?" Dean asked out loud.
"Good news, Mr.Rodgers." Chiron addressed Dean.
Dean straightened his back, trying to maintain a respectful gaze. It isn't every day that a magical centaur builds you a house.
"The Hephaestus campers were more than willing to take up this building project, and if you help sell our strawberries and make sure to divert attention away from Camp, it will surely pay off all debt the this cabin might cost us."
Dean nodded. "Yes, sir."
"Follow me, gentlemen." Chiron began trotting over the hill, and Dean and I quickly picked ourselves up from the tall grass and hurried over to catch up with everyone. We slowed down to a walk next to Simon Lee. Simon was a skinny 13-year old with a mouthful of braces and wild hair that points in every direction. His face is almost always covered in grease and grime and he had a pair of goggles plastered to his forehead over his dark almond eyes. His scrawny physique always stood out amongst his half-siblings, and I could always easily spot him amongst the crowd of muscle.
"How old exactly are these guys?" Dean asked me warily.
"The youngest is probably 9." I pointed out.
It didn't seem like that was the answer he wanted to hear.
"Don't worry, guy. These guys are the children of the GOD of building stuff. You might as well had hired the most expensive, professional home builders in the state."
Dean gulped. "I hope you're right."
We made our way over the hill and past the border, stopping to wave at Peleus the dragon, who was peacefully coiled around Thalia's tree. Dean stared at the dragon in disbelief.
"There's dragons too?"
"Dude, Greek Mythology has everything. I wouldn't be surprised if zombies sprouted up from the ground and began picking strawberries."
Dean made a face that didn't seem like he fancied having the undead as coworkers.
"How far past the border, Chiron?" I called out.
"Just a few yards, we don't want to have a cabin too close to the borders. It'll make mortals more curious and too close."
About 30 yards diagonally away from Thalia's tree, we found a flat clearing, and everyone put their house-making weapons down. Chiron passed Dean a couple of blueprints.
"Here are examples of the cabin we can build." Chiron informed him.
Dean pursed his lips and darted his eyes back and forth in between design, until he finally raised one in the air.
"This one's rad."
"Hey, wait, let me see!" I snagged the blueprint from his hands to look at the plans for his future living space.
My jaw dropped. I was excited for him.
"Dude this is gonna be so cool. You gotta invite me to your house parties sometime." I told him.
Chiron cleared his throat. "Anyways," He began, taking the chosen blueprint away from me. "Let's get started."
The Hephaestus cabin crowded around the blueprint, exchanging whispers and game plans.
"Hey, Airhead," I heard Lily's voice call out.
I turned to see a hard hat thrown at me.
I fumbled it in the air for a second, until I got impatient and spread my arms apart, willing the air to lift the helmet onto my head. At least, that's what my intentions were. What really happened was the hard hat disappointingly fell onto the ground, completely unaltered. I frowned in frustration and I kicked the hard hat as if it just insulted my mother. The orange helmet skidded across the ground until it rolled into Lily's feet. I looked up at her slightly concerned face, my face growing hot in embarrassment.
"Are you alright, Luke?" She asked, picking my helmet back up and walking up towards me, just a few inches away.
I felt cold and out of place. I never tried to use my powers before since my quest, and only now was the idea sinking in. If I can't use my powers, I began what kind of demigod am I?
Lily placed the hard hat onto my shaggy hair, fixing the straps under my chin. I looked at her, and she caught my eye, giving me a reassuring smile as she finally snapped the straps together. I couldn't help smile back. No matter what, I could always smile back at Lily.
"Tell me later if you need anything, okay?" She whispered to me.
"Ahem." We both looked over to see an inquisitive-looking Dean, with an eyebrow raised.
"Oh, um. Right." Lily picked another hard hat from the ground and tossed it over to Dean, who actually caught it. "One for you too, Mr.Rodgers."
