Max was a few hundred feet off of the border, right where the road met the hill that climbed into Camp Half-Blood. Today was coffee day. Max had run out of his last supply, and he was getting the jitters. Damn it all, he was probably addicted to the caffeine with how much he drank on a regular basis. His foot kept tapping and he kept rubbing his hands together as if he was trying to warm them, even though it was seventy-three degrees outside and he was sweating his ass of in the suit he 'borrowed' from a Hermes camper, who probably 'borrowed' it as well. Max adjusted the collar on his button up shirt, hoping his sweat wouldn't stain the white shirt yellow. The shirt alone was fine, but Max had a sports jacket over top of it, to look nice. He liked how he looked, despite the heat, and he needed to look his best anyway so his 'friend' would think Max was still a nice guy who was liked by everyone. Max kept jittering, and he tried to curl his hair. He always did that when he felt jittery, it seemed to calm him down. When he tried to though, he remembered he just had his hair cut a few days ago. The last time he waited for his 'friend,' some freak tried to take a bite out of his skull, and almost succeeded thanks to Max's long hair being in arms reach. He wasn't taking any chances this time, he trimmed it and decided to play it safe. Max checked his watch and tapped on the glass covering the cogs, his 'friend' was three minutes late. After a few more minutes of shuffling around and brushing his arms, Max's 'friend' arrived. A cop car came rolling up, sagging down heavily on the driver side. The windows were tinted, and the squad car looked like it had seen it's fair share of chases. The doors were all dented, and the hood seemed to cave in a little bit in a few places. It had reflective windows, so you couldn't see the driver, but you could see yourself. It came rolling to a stop just in front of Max, and the engine turned off. Max walked around to the driver's side of the car, and leaned down to see inside. Max stared at his own reflection for a second, and slowly the window rolled down. Inside the car was a heavyset cop who looked like he survived off of doughnuts. This guy looked like the typical overweight cop (but with a lot more hair), and he reeked of doughnuts, which would of been fine if he didn't have stains all over his beard and uniform. You probably couldn't even call it that, the police uniform was so tight it looked like a skin suit, but the guy didn't seem to mind.
Max gave him a charismatic smile, "Hey Juliusr."
The fat man gave him an annoyed look and rolled his eyes. "For the twentieth time Valentine, call me 'Jay.' Juliusr sounds so odd around the ladies." Jay gave a cough, and finished off the strawberry doughnut he was already eating.
Max laughed, "And for the twentieth time, call me Max. You sound like my dad."
"I'm old enough to be your dad, hell, I have your looks and everything." Jay said.
"I don't think my dad is two thousand years old though, he's probably much older, but I can see where the likeness comes in." Max rubbed his jaw, and sarcastically compared his face to Jay's.
"Oh cut the crap, I'm just pulling your tail. No need to go on about it." Jay began coughing again, and he pulled out a handkerchief to cover his mouth.
Jay was Max's long time friend. He was a werewolf, and a lazy one at that. Jay once told him that he had to shave three times a day to make sure his entire face didn't look like he was wearing animal pelts. They met on one of Max's previous coffee runs. Max needed to get into this place called Monster Donut, but he saw a few kids be chased out by cyclops. Max tried his luck, and he actually got the donuts and coffee. It turns out it was a sick joke from the cashier to give Max hope, but they underestimated him. He put that whole entire store to sleep faster than any anesthetic could, and he bolted. He made it out on the road, and waved down the first car he saw. Jay rolled down the window, and tried to look threatening. He snarled and grew hair quickly, like he was transforming. Max panicked and tried to shield himself with the Monster Donut bag. Immediately Jay let up on the scare act, and pigged out on Max's spoils. He would of been mad, but Jay did offer him a ride back to Camp Half-Blood, which was cool. On the way back, they bonded and became friends when they arrived back at camp. Juliusr was a washed up werewolf who just wanted to live peacefully and lazily, and he saved Max's life, so they cut a deal. Max gives Jay all of the doughnuts from each run, in exchange for Jay giving Max a ride when he needs it. That's how it started anyway, but it grew into just two guys having a good time robbing doughnut shops. Jay was like a father figure to Max, he was around more than Hypnos ever was, and Max could actually talk to him without the fear of being put to sleep forever.
They both did the same routine every run. Find a store, hit the place, and get out carrying an absurd amount of doughnuts and coffee bags. Jay may have looked fat and lazy, but that guy could run when it depended on food. He was an eating machine, packed with muscle. Max once saw him tackle a full grown cyclops just to get to a few more bags of munchkins. It was sort of a brains and brawn kind of deal, with Max leading the way as Jay muscled their way out if things got bad.
Max and Jay continued to have idle chat, discussing some hot girls Jay had seen (Even though Max had no interest in sexy ladies, but it was nice to talk to with Jay about things that made him happy), the plan for the run, and overall how life was between the two. In the middle of their chat, Max stopped mid sentence as he saw someone walking down the hill. "Oh shit!" He whispered. "Alright Jay, I need you to act as natural as possible, okay? Try not to make it obvious you're a monster? I don't want this camper freaking out and trying to hurt you." Jay looked at Max and nodded, touched by how much he was cared about. Jay looked down into his bag of doughnuts and began snacking, focusing only on the food for the time being. Max pushed himself off of the car and walked around to the passenger side door. He adjusted his sports coat, and turned his back to Jay, and watched the camper walk down. "Hello, kind of odd to see someone outside so late at night. Especially with all of the terrors out here in the woods." Max gave the person smile that says: 'I'm annoyed you are here.'
(Decided to do something special for my 100th post.)
(P.S. If you need to envision Jay, just think of Simon Russell Beale as Falstaff from 'The Hollow Crown'.)
