Everything was going along smoothly, the dummy still seemed to register John as the primary threat even if he was acting on the defense. It launched an assortment of spears and arrows at him but he managed to run right past each one while I swiped at the dummy with his sword. That is until John's direction began to curve inward, towards the dummy. My eyebrows furrowed against each other on the browline. I felt my eyes widen again as John ran at it at full speed. 'What happened to indirect?' I wanted to scream out. His dark eyes seemed trained on something on the dummy, I followed his gaze to see a large compartment open up in the dummy. John's shoulders began to haunch as he grew closer to his target, and it looked like he was about to give the thing a bear hug with a death grip. I wanted yell at him that he was running in the other direction but my advice would would most likely be ineffective. The determination in his face was like no other, and I knew if I tried to make him turn back now I would just be clotheslined in him. I stole a glance back at the dummy and caught the glimmer of bronze from the hilt of my knife that still jutted out of the dummy. I slammed my hands around the handle and tore it out of the dummy's chest, might as well help John's suicidal tactics become less suicidal by reducing the chance of getting stabbed in the chest by the blunt end of my knife. I stumbled backwards as John impacted with the dummy.
He told me to run.
It's not that I didn't want to play the hero and stop John from blowing himself up, but information filled my brain in that split second and the best decision I could think of was to heed to his order. If I tried to be brave, I would only be stupid. I had no armour and trying to peel a determined Ares camper off a dummy might just make the explosion worse. As much as I fought to stay with him, I sprinted from John and the death trap. I dove into a few crates lying around that were full of replacement straw for the dummies as I heard a large KABOOM!
I squeezed my eyes shut and cover the back of my head. Soon after the impact pushed the crate and I tumbled out of it. I rolled onto the stone floor before quickly trying to scramble back up to check over the damages. Where the dummy was, there was a smoldering pile of scrap metal and an assortment of melting weapons. John must've been blown back because he was nowhere to be seen.
"John? John!" I ran towards the pile of metal, hoping I could get a better look for where he's been pushed back to. I ran towards it and searched at the corner of the room, adjacent to where John had hugged the dummy. Underneath a rack of weapons that had seemed to fallen over and spilled all over the floor, I saw a glimmer of a golden shin guard. I ran towards it and began digging until I found the rest of the Ares camper. My mind went into medic overload and I pushed the nervousness in my throat down, something I was used to doing to calm patients who could possibly be in shock.
"John, can you hear me? How are you feeling?"
He told me to run.
