I sat there with my hand on Roxy's shoulder, I couldn't stop thinking of how proud I was of her. When I had first really met her she was so quiet and shy, but now I felt like I'd known her for my whole life, like she was fully my blood sister. I kept my smile on my face. Luke was looking off through the back window of the car, his face straight, eyebrows furrowed as if in deep thought. I felt bad for him. I hadn't known what it was like to have someone in your head, almost controlling what you fear until tonight. It mad me angry that a spirit could make me see the thing I feared most. I had never told anyone but Casper about my fear of clowns. I felt my smile fall as I dwelled on the thoughts. If I hadn't been such a pussy Finn wouldn't have gotten hurt. When I had seen the clowns poking their wide-grinning faces out from behind trees and from inside the car, something in my mind snapped, and I couldn't feel any part of my body anymore. I remembered the bone chilling sounds of the clowns as they cackled like crazed hyenas at my fear, like they were feeding off of it, enjoying every bit of it. My friends had disappeared, and I had felt completely alone and exposed, like in my dream. I knew they were trying to get me to move. I could feel them tugging on my arms. But all I could see were the clowns getting closer to me, grabbing at my arms trying to pull me apart. Their eye sockets had been empty, lined with blue makeup and expertly drawn eyebrows. Their mouths had been open, teeth as sharp as razors were being bared. I tried my hardest to move, to wake myself up from the nightmare, to leave the thoughts. As Finn, Roxy and Luke tried to get me to snap out of it on the outside, but inside my hallucinations I was getting engulfed by white-faced demons, who tugged on my arms and felt their way up my legs from their knees. When Finn had slapped me, the clowns had disappeared slightly and the view of my friends came back. It made me less scared to feel less alone, and as I worked up all the courage I had to try and get back to them, the thing that jarred me from my nightmare was the urgency I felt as Finn collapsed to the ground, wrestling a rabid raccoon. The clown's fell to the ground and let out blood curling screams and seemed as if they were being dragged away, when they realized I wasn't scared of them. I shook the thoughts out of my head and rubbed my eyes with the hand that wasn't on Roxy's shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Finn," I said. Luke was jerked from his thoughts, he looked at me, at first looking confused.
"What for?" She asked.
"If I hadn't frozen up, you wouldn't have gotten hurt and nearly died," I said. I looked back at her over the back seats. She looked like she wanted to give me a snarky, sarcastic response, but she decided against it.
"Without your playing Roxy wouldn't have healed me. I should thank you, you helped save me," she said. I let out a sigh.
"Don't make me have to save you again," I said.
"Ha, who's the one usually saving YOUR ass?" She asked with a smirk.
"Hey! Who saved you from those little gremlins back at the variety store, AND the big Hawaiian guy who probably would have kicked your asses if I hadn't used my own Hawaiian charm to win him over." I pointed out, a smile returning to my face. She looked at me with a grin.
"Alright, Haiku face, calm your tits," she said.
Luke snickered beside me. I looked at him and we shared a smile.
"You still look like a dalmatian," he said as he studied my face. I had forgotten my face was probably still bruised all over. There was a slight tingling in my cheek that I hadn't noticed until I started thinking about all the places I had been hit on this trip. It was most likely from Finn's hand when she slapped me earlier.
"That's not my fault, is it Brah?" I said with a smirk. Luke grinned.
"Guess not." I thought about what Casper would say if he saw me like this. He would worry as he always did, and he would ask if it hurt, and continue to make sure I was okay, like a mother worried about her child after they had fallen off a bike. A goofy smile played on my face as I thought of him. My chest felt like it had compressed as my heart started to speed up. I slouched a bit where I sat and held my stomach with the had that wasn't on Roxy's shoulder.
"...What are you thinking about?" Luke said, one eyebrow raised. I snapped back to reality and the thoughts of Casper vanished.
"What? Nothing." I said, a little too quickly to be believable. Luke smirked.
"Thinking of someone back at camp? Does Fletchy-Wetchy have a crushy?" He asked poking my side.
"You're one to talk, Morning Wood." I said. Luke snorted and lay his head on the back seats of the car. He looked at the sky, and seemed at peace for a second, a smile playing on his face. His eyes drooped, becoming lazy like Finns. I could tell my face and reactions had gotten him thinking about Lily. I grinned and looked out the side window to the right. Roxy's soft breathing caused my hand to rise and fall along with it, as it was still placed on her shoulder. I looked down at her, she was clutching her book to her chest, taking comfort and safety in between Luke and I. I knew I would never get to sleep tonight after what happened earlier. Finn was quiet, I looked back.
"You alright, Finn?" I asked.
"Yeah... Yeah, just thinking." She said. She sounded like she didn't want to explain further. I left it alone taking comfort in knowing that she was okay. We drove on for hours. I felt bad for Finn. She would have to go another day driving without sleep and she had just almost died. The sun was starting to come up on the horizon. My thoughts turned to my father, who I knew would be raising the sun with his Sun-Chariot that very moment. Luke and I watched it in silence. The light projected itself onto his face, making him look less tired and more happy. I smiled, and returned my gaze to the sunrise. The sky was washed with colours as the morning dawn gave off it's tranquil scene. Dew had formed on the back window. The sky started out dark blue, and slowly became red, then pink, then lighter blue. I had never noticed how beautiful the sky and the sun could be. It was a cliche moment. Roxy stirred slightly as the light started to shine on her face, but she didn't look up.
