We jogged towards the big house, but all I could think of was that we were all safe. It felt like a large amount of weight had been lifted from my shoulders, but I knew there was a lot to go before we were completely free from harm. Charlie's been brainwashing the satyrs and nymphs, and he was undoubtedly going to use that against us. Worry washed over me over Leo. He was my best friend, and the only person who had stuck around almost my whole life. I couldn't let anything bad happen to him. The sun had begun making it's way down, darkening the sky and filling it with a burst of orange and purple. The camp must have just been finishing dinner. I opened the screen door to find Chiron and Mr.D, playing Pinochle at their usual place. I wondered if they ever got tired of playing it for so many years. Mr.D looked exhausted, there were bags under his eyes that mimicked Charlie's and Liam's and I began to see the scary family resemblance. He looked too sober for a wine god's own good, and he barely looked at us when we entered.
"Took you long enough." He muttered, his eyes glued to the game.
Chiron turned around, and a relieved smile grew on his face.
Until he began counting us.
"Where's..." He trailed off when he saw our faces. A sudden look of understanding washed over his face.
"I'll begin the vigil immediately."
Chiron stood up quickly from his wheelchair, his horse body sprung out expertly, as if he's done it multiple times before.
"Wait," I heard Liam's voice call out.
I turned to see him look down at his pockets, rummaging do something. He pulled out a crumpled piece of paper with a drawing on it.
"I-I found this on the ground before we ran out... I don't know why but I picked it up and put it in my pocket... I think it's a drawing Justin made... I remember he showed it to Lily and I before we-we got brainwashed." Liam's voice shook at the end, stronger than his regular smooth voice, but his face betrayed no emotion. He uncrumpled it and showed us. At least twenty stick figures and one stickman-centaur
filled the page, labelled with the names of campers around camp. I spotted Finn, Lily, Morgan, and Liam in the mix. Even a frowny faced Gary was included in this giant circle of friends. I felt like I was going to cry when I saw an especially happy demigod in the middle, with a huge drawn on smile that was labelled 'Me'. Holding hands with that stick figure was a taller one with a smile and a line going through it's circle-eyes. It was labelled 'Luke'.
Liam let us have a look, and then handed it to Chiron. The last thing we had left of Justin.
Chiron nodded, taking the drawing and trotted out. He gave Mr.D a look before he left, and the tired god sighed.
"Alright, alright. I guess it's my turn to ask: how did the quest go? Was it fun? Did you make new friends? It looks like you did." Mr.D noted, his eyes moved from us to Dean, who I almost forgot was here, his eyes wide and his mouth shut, Chiron probably freaked him out when he turned from handicapable to horse.
"U-uhm, yes. Sir. Person. Whatever you are."
"Oh, just, you know, the god of wine." Fletch responded.
Mr.D seemed content with the attention he was receiving.
"And who must you be? You're definitely not a halfblood. Which I congratulate you for. They're nothing but trouble."
"I-I'm Dean Rodgers."
"OH Dean Rodgers! That clears everything up! Dean. Rodgers. I was waiting for a Dean Rodgers for weeks, I was wondering when Dean Rodgers was going to get here and make my life easier." Mr.D said in sarcastic excitement. "So what are you? My new intern?"
"We met him during the quest. He's got nowhere to go and I was hoping we could talk to Chiron about maybe making accommodations..." I began.
"What's wrong, Luke Dennings? Anything you can go through with Chiron you can go through with me." He said with a smug look on his face.
"Well, Mr.D..." Lily began putting a hand on my shoulder as if saying 'yo I got this'.
"We were thinking of, with the help of the Hephaestus kids, to build a small cabin just off the border of the camp."
"We were?" Fletch asked out.
Lily turned her head briefly to Dean with a silent question on her eyes. Dean nodded, seeming okay with this plan made out for him.
"He.... he can drive! He could help sell the strawberries in the city so Argus can stay here and help out in the infirmary."
Mr.D pondered for a second, thinking if an extra pair of hands would be worth it. Not that he was risking anything. At all.
"He can make sure people don't come across here." Lily offered.
"Lost people coming here looking for nightclubs are annoying... deal."
Lily turned to Dean, embarrassed.
"I hope that's okay."
"Uh-uhm that's fine." Dean replied, flustered at Lily's embarrassed lip biting tactic.
Finn laughed. "Do you even know what you do to people, Lily?" she asked.
All she did in reply was laugh, her face growing red. It was really cute. I was so glad she was back. I shook my head, I had to tell Mr.D, well, preferably Chiron, what was going on. Mr.D stared at me a if I was growing a third eye an that third eye was staring daggers at him as I sat down across from him at the Pinochle table.
"Look, um, your son...Charlie... he's got a hold of the Three Fates and he's planning to become powerful enough to make them cut the life lines of the gods. He grows more powerful from taking the emotions from others... and he's been brainwashing the nymphs and satyrs from camp... and I suspect elsewhere to be his minions and stuff..." I mumbled out the last part, Mr.D seemed to grow bored and unimpressed with my status report.
"Don't you think I would've already known when my son's trying to steal my nymphs and satyrs."
"Um... just saying... we should be careful and stay away from the forest... "
"We've already set border patrols on the forest. No one can get in or out."
"Out? We need to get everyone out of there! Not keep them in!"
"They belong in the forest, they can't just all live in the cabins. Especially if they're brainwashed."
"Then he's gonna take all our satyrs and nymphs! I bet he's using them to grow more powerful too!"
"You think I don't know what my own son is doing? We've set up traps and the patrols are going to keep a lookout for him."
"well then get them out of there!" I couldn't believe it.
No way would I let Leo or any of the satyrs and nymphs stay cooped up with maniac like Charlie roaming the forest. Mr.D's expression showed no willingness to change his mind and I wondered to what extent Chiron knows of his plan. I jumped from the chair, burst open the door and tore through the fields, about to plummet into the inviting shade of the forest until I ran into a invisible force, not unlike the camp's, and fell flat on my butt.
"Took you long enough." He muttered, his eyes glued to the game.
