Luke lead us through the busy streets of Manhattan as he kept his eyes peeled for taxis. He seemed like an expert in the area, I assume if we were in New York City I would be doing the same. As I did my best to dodge every impatient business man or woman that seemed to be heading straight for me without losing my footing, I thought about my grandparents. I remembered when they had taken me here, it had been over the summer, and I had remembered begging them the whole school year to go on a summer trip, it didn't matter where, I just wanted to go somewhere. I remembered we had taken Casper too, I had only known him for a year. We had stayed in a hotel, it had been the best trip ever. So close to home, yet so special. I remember thinking it better than the time my grandparents had taken me to my birth place, Hawaii. I was jogged from my thoughts as Luke stopped, standing beside a taxi that was parked near the sidewalk.
"... Does this taxi look a bit... Shiny to you guys?" He asked. I looked at the taxi, it was definitely way brighter than the other ones that were passing by on the street. The sun was shining down on it, giving it a sort of glow. The dark tinted window began to slowly roll down. A young man was sitting in the driver seat. He had blonde hair, I couldn't tell the colour of his eyes, as his dark sunglasses were blocking them.
"Glad you noticed, step bro," he said with a smirk, "just tuned her up a bit." Step bro? I thought,
"Who's this?" I asked him. Luke looked at me and patted me on my back.
"Fletch, this is Apollo, god of Archery, the sun, medicine, the arts and prophecies. Oh, and your dad." I stared into the car, my mouth was wide open. I probably looked like an idiot, but who wouldn't? I was just introduced to my father, the man who I had not seen for my whole life.
"I... Uh... Hi," I said. WOW, that was lame, I thought so myself. I looked at Roxy, who I'd assumed had met our father before, but her face seemed to express the same things that mine did. Apollo sat looking at our faces, he decided to get out of the car and make his way around the front to lean on the door of the passengers seat.
"Hey, kiddo's," Apollo said looking at the two of us. I had slowly made my way to stand beside Roxy, I hadn't even realized I'd done it. "Sorry this introduction took so long, you two," Apollo continued after we had said nothing. "I never found the right time to, uh, y'know, visit."
"So why now?" Roxy asked quietly.
"Well, my dear, my son is going on his first quest, and my daughter is having a rough time. I thought it might be a good time for a little daddy introduction." Roxy didn't say anything. Luke and Finn stood off to the side quietly. I stared at Apollo, there he was, my dad, the man I had never laid eyes on before in my life, standing right in front of me. I wanted to go and poke his face, but somehow I figured he wouldn't like that. I knew dad was a bit of a beauty queen, based on stories that other campers had told me. Apollo turned to me, flashing me a smile, showing off his white teeth.
"I have something for you, Fletch," he said as he reached into the passenger seat of the car. "I know while your grandfather was teaching you the Ukelele, your grandmother was teaching you the violin on the side," Apollo started. It was true, my family was a very musical bunch. My grandmother used to play the violin when she was young, and she had always loved it so much, I had taken an interest in the instrument after finding it in the closet of our condo. My grandfather would play the Ukelele for hours on end, which is how I got interested in that. "This is a gift from me to you, I hope it makes up for all the missed birthdays and Christmas's," he said handing me a violin case. It was a hard case, the neck and the scroll of the violin poked out of it. There was a strap attached to it, one that would fit nicely over my shoulder and around my chest. The bow of the violin was crafted in beautiful oak and the horse hair was clean and shiny. Apollo noticed me admiring it and smirked, "Pegasus hair," he said. The bow fit in the side of the case perfectly, I unzipped the top of the case and pulled out a beautiful violin, crafted of oak just like it's bow. It was light weight. Painted on the body was a sun.
"Thank you so much, dad," I said smiling up at him.
"I hope you don't think that's all, bud," he said smiling back at me, "turn the top right tuning peg until it clicks." I twisted the tuning peg and it clicked, the body of the violin transformed into a quiver, each string turning into beautifully crafted arrows. The bow of the violin transformed into a bow to match the arrows, the pegasus tail hair turning into a silvery bow string.
"Man!" Said Luke, "that's so cool!"
"Dad!" I exclaimed, "this is amazing!"
"Glad you like it, bud," he said, "turn the top bow notch to turn it back, don't worry, it will be perfectly tuned and ready for playing when you're done." I did as he said and turned the top bow notch until I heard the click. I placed the violin back in its case and stuck the violin bow into the side of it, I fastened it around my chest so that the case was hanging from my back. I smiled at him. He turned his attention to Roxy, who had been quiet the whole time.
"I'm sorry I don't have any kickass magical items for you, my dear, just some words of wisdom." Roxy looked up at him, she seemed to be listening fully, but I guessed she was a bit nervous. My stomach had erupted into butterflies, and I hadn't noticed until now. My hands were shaking and my knees felt weak, but I stood strong and watched the two. Apollo took off his sunglasses to look his daughter in her hazel eyes.
"I know what you've been thinking about, and I just wanted to tell you not to worry. You have to find yourself, and I will stand by you, everyone will stand by you. Everything Leo has been saying is true. You're not alone. Don't let it make you a different person. Everybody loves their level-headed, smart Roxy. I'm proud of you." Roxy looked like she was about to cry. Apollo pulled her in for a hug, it seemed awkward for the both of them at first, but after a while it got more casual.
"Alright!" Apollo said after he had finished hugging Roxy. Finn and Luke got a little closer, "who needs a ride to the airport?"
